THOMPSON '76 NAMED TO EPA SCIENCE ADVISORY BOARD
Vice Dean and Robert E. Paradise Professor of Natural Resources Law Barton H. Thompson, Jr., JD/MBA '76 (AB '72), has been appointed to the Environmental Protection Agency's Committee on Valuing the Protection of Ecological Systems and Services.

LESSIG RECEIVES ABA'S FIRST CYBERSPACE LAW AWARD
On August 8, the American Bar Association's Section of Business Law presented Lawrence Lessig, Professor of Law and Director of the SLS Center for Internet and Society, with its first Cyberspace Law Excellence Award. Professor Lessig was also recently named "one of the 50 most influential people in IP" by "Managing Intellectual Property" magazine.

CREIGHTON '84 TO HEAD FTC'S BUREAU OF COMPETITION
Susan Creighton '84 has been tapped to head the Federal Trade Commission's Bureau of Competition, where she will lead a team of 250 lawyers. According to its website, the Bureau "seeks to prevent business practices that restrain competition."

GEORGE '64: NEW CHIEF OF CONFERENCE OF CHIEF JUSTICES
California Chief Justice Ronald M. George '64 recently took office as President of the Conference of Chief Justices. As CCJ President, he also became Chair of the Board of Directors of the National Center for State Courts.

The Law School's Center for Internet and Society and the Electronic Frontier Foundation have created a website providing resources for smart card users targeted by DirecTV's cease-and-desist letters and nearly 9,000 smart-card-related lawsuits.
