STANFORD COMMUNITY LAW CLINIC TO OPEN ITS DOORS
On Friday, November 1, Stanford Law School plans to launch a new Community Law Clinic that will provide free legal services to low-income clients in neighboring communities, including East Palo Alto and East Menlo Park, and will offer Stanford Law students valuable opportunities to develop a wide range of legal skills through live-client representation. The clinic will focus initially on housing law and workers' rights.

HELPING COUNTRIES IN TRANSITION
Stanford Law School has joined Stanford's Graduate School of Business and Institute for International Studies in establishing the Center on Democracy, Development and the Rule of Law, the focus of which will be examining how countries in transition can be assisted in reaching a measure of economic and political stability. Thomas Heller, Lewis Talbot and Nadine Hearn Shelton Professor of International Legal Studies, will act as a faculty coordinator for the center.

NEW INTERDISCIPLINARY ENVIRONMENTAL LAW DEGREE
This fall, Stanford Law School has teamed up with Stanford's new Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Environment and Resources to offer a JD/MS degree. The joint degree program will train the next generations of scholars to find effective solutions to real-world problems through integrating scientific and social research into environmental law.

SECURING CYBERSPACE
On Wednesday, September 18, Richard Clarke, Chairman of President Bush's Critical Infrastructure Protection Board, unveiled a draft report entitled "The National Strategy to Secure Cyberspace" at Stanford Law School. On hand to speak at the rollout event were FBI Director Robert Mueller III, Secret Service Director Brian Stafford, and Stanford President John Hennessy, among others.

COACHING THE DIRECTORS
On June 1 through 3, 2003, directors and senior executives of publicly traded companies will gather at Stanford Law School for its ninth annual Directors' College. This year participants will enroll in new intensive half-day sessions on best practices for audit committees; best practices for compensation committees; and litigation, insurance, and indemnification; and listen to featured speakers Charles T. Munger, Vice Chairman, Berkshire Hathaway, Inc.; Harvey L. Pitt, Chairman, United States Securities and Exchange Commission; and Hon. E. Norman Veasey, Chief Justice, State of Delaware, among others. CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS AND LIBERTIES IN A NATIONAL SECURITY CRISIS
Dean Kathleen M. Sullivan was one of twelve Americans asked by the New York Times for "their views on the most significant change the country has undergone in the year since September 11." Her thoughts and those of, among others, Tom Daschle, Muhammad Ali, and William J. Bennett appeared in a September 8 piece titled "Reflections on an America Transformed."

In its September 30 issue, the Daily Journal rolled out its "fifth annual list of the state's most influential lawyers, including 21 titans who have made the cut each year." Among this year's top 100 are Mary B. Cranston '75 (AB '70), Professor Joseph A. Grundfest '78, Beth. J. Jay '72, Michael A. Kahn '73 (AM '73), Professor Lawrence Lessig, Stephen C. Neal '73 , and Richard M. Pachulski '79. Warren Christopher '49, Hon. Ronald M. George '64, and Dean Kathleen M. Sullivan are among the quinquennial "titans."
